On the State of the Server
#46
Nightingstar, I have to disagree with your point about Rome. I have it from a good source (Ancient Roman books) that Romulus killed his brother and then built the city of Rome all in the same day. Just like I have it on good authority from Egyptian Hieroglyphics that Ramesses the Great killed all of the Hittites single handedly at the battle of Kadesh, causing them to sue for peace.

What does this new information from sources aged thousands of years have to do with the "state of the server", one might ask? Absolutely nothing. But what I do know is that this is the greatest WoW RP server on Earth. Kretol made it with his bare hands from the bones of the Dragon-God Leviathan, the Destroyer of Worlds, whom he defeated by head butting. And I'll be darned if I see if fall this year because we can't decide on which direction the server should go.

Maybe this server is better in its current state. This might be the state it's mostly been in. I don't see the mass-banning of players for disagreeing with the GM's. I don't see people running around and claiming that they are Thraina, the half orc daughter of Thrall and Jaina. I don't see things which infect the public WoW RP servers made available by Blizzard. Kretol battled the the three headed giant demon bunny of Nazaarith to obtain the code for this server, for the purpose of creating a server where good roleplay exists without fear of godmoders, trolls, and characters from other videogames. When OOC drama occurs, I have always seen it resolved in a manner that makes everyone happy. And for that, I say this server is not failing. No, it is succeeding in its intended purpose. To be our, the communities, virtual playground.

No, there is not something wrong with the server or the player base. You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you might find you get what you need.

No disrespect meant (how I hate seeing that phrase, but I mean it this time), but to me it feels like there always is a small group of players that feel the server is going towards mount doom but dropped the ring, that we need to turn back -now- or at least find a better guide than good old Smeagol. And every now and again the fellowship currently feeling this way becomes very vocal, it's enough if one person makes a post about it and then in the next few days, sometimes weeks, we'll see a dozen more threads (often very similar in content) pop up.

Someone says 'the RP is stale, people do this-and-this and it's just wrong' or 'the GMs are too strict, they should let us do this-and-this, or something along those lines, someone sees it, agrees, replies and then later posts their own thread with their own concerns. People see that, and repeats the process. It just seems that once someone posts about something that they think is bad, three other guys feel they should too. Often with very similar opinions. Like, I think one thing, voices that, and the next day my two buddies repeats it in their own words.

Hehe.

My point is, often it turns into cycle were we see a few people post about how we're going in the wrong direction, and when looking at the forums one gets the impression that shit is going downhill fast, the drama train is racing, the four riders are riding across the skies and... well, yeah. Then you go online and things are... just as they always are. The drama is just on the forums, feeding on itself, somehow managing to grow bigger for a short time before vanishing without much trace.

After almost three years here now I've found myself having a hard time taking any of these posts very seriously, not that they don't bring up good points but because I just feel like I've seen them so many times.

Now, this isn't anything personal, I agree with much of what Scout (and others, in the past) has said, I just felt like I should take the chance to vent my own opinion now that we seem to be in another cycle of hatred drama.

Honestly, things aren't perfect, but they're still damn good and we got a lot of great roleplayers here. Conquest of the Horde is going strong and I hope am confident it won't failcascade any time soon. Or maybe we've been on the precipice for so long I've been jaded?

Well, maybe on the other hand, it's that way all the time because things seldom change?
Don't be offended by my avatar. It's not intended to be a handicap sticker, but a man with a gigantic butt.

AM180 and Nostra, I hereby give you a big compliment for your posts. Good read, made me laugh and both got to the point quickly. *Thumbs up*

^ This. Life isn't perfect either, so how can a server filled with real life people be perfect? I'm honestly not sure what else to add, as I've given my thoughts a few posts up but felt like it deserved to be repeated and complimented upon.

Sometimes, a simple "Thanks" ain't good enough. :)

... I was mostly complaining about people ruining events, by going all drama queen about it.. :D

You know.. I was a little discouraged at the calibre of rp after I had played on the server for a few weeks.. waaaaait.. this is not a rant.. hang on :) I mean the rpers are great.. just the content of the rp. -BUT- I have to say that's all changed!!

I decided that the server's basics had everything i wanted so what could i do to make it more fun for myself. and taddaaaa.. surprise surprise things changed for the better.

I decided to get out and do the quests to learn the lore of the land to give my character some depth. This provided great info for contributing to rp and a great backdrop to spawn further rp. In doing so, I met some great players. I also responded to someone via the "looking for group" channel which turned out to be awesome. Basically we had an OOC chat before meeting up to make sure we were on the same page as to what we both wanted out of rp.

Great rp really is out there. Thanks again to those who take their free time to provide the server. - caveat - Please don't think this as preachy.. I had 'commented' earlier and just wanted to provide an update also I haven't participated in any 'events' so I'm not commenting from that perspective either.
