Light Runes
#16
Well, I don't think runes per say would be possible....but there is -one- small thing that I do indeed think might possibly maybe support this.

All of you remember the trailer for TBC? A Draenei Paladin is shown holding a large book. He flips through the pages, stopping on a single page. He waves his hand over a symbol, and Light flows from it and encases him. He then shuts the book and walks off in a quite bad-ass manner.

Whatever it was he used, I think it might possibly maybe eh not really be classified as a Rune.

A common misconception is that Arcane runes are symbols of power. This is wrong. In the case of Arcane runes (the only form of 'energy' that merges with runes) these runes ARE the power. The runes are the Ley Lines across Azeroth, and Rune Casters (I.E inscribers and Runemasters) use those runes to invoke the power of the ley lines. The mages for example just bend the Arcane to their will.

The runes you've put on there are honestly just symbols. Those runes are just decoration and don't actually invoke any sort of divine magic, because divine magic is only created from within themselves. Whereas Magi actually tap into Arcane, divine magic really can't be anything that's tapped into. It's created because of their belief in the faith. It's hard to explain, but it really just is "If you believe in it, you can use it" with divine energy.

Then, can I have the belief I am imbuing this symbol I drew with Light? And, since belief is power, it works?

... I need to phrase things better.

No, that doesn't work, because that's like saying you believe that the Light can make you 20 feet tall and it would work. I'm not trying to say "You can do anything... IF YOU BELIEVE!" I'm saying the divine energy actually comes from the belief in that philosophy, and it's not something you draw from like Arcane.

You can believe that all you want, and for that reason the item may have a special meaning to you, strengthening your faith or what not.

But I doubt it'd do anything for someone else, because divine magic is based on the faith of the person using it. While you may believe that your prayer beads are infused with the Light's energy, others may not.

Like Hawk said, Divine magic really comes from yourself rather then from a mystical font of power.

Mhm. My way of explaining this is....Divine magic is your will power and belief incarnate. It is the manifestation of your want to do good.

When you're forming and then throwing a ball of Holy Fire, it's your rage and want to smite evil taking the form of divine magic. The stronger willed you are, the stronger you are with the Light. Paladins may have different preferences in how they fight and -use- the Light, but it all comes in the same way. Protection Paladins have a profound want or even a -need- to protect and guard others, this will takes form in holy shields and barriers. Retribution Paladins have an aggressive will and want nothing more than to smite evil and obliterate, their will takes form as Holy Fire and allows them to even encase their weapons in Light to cut through evil. Holy Paladins want to heal the wounds brought by evil, and safeguard the lives of the innocent, this takes form as healing waves and abilities to increase allies strength.

I know. Just tossing every question I can out there. And, Keak, I believe (hurr) that what the draenei paladin was using in the opening movie was a libram. I know little about those, however.

I've always seen Librams as Prayer Books. And at the Pre-BC, he casts a Seal of Righteousness spell. That's the animation at all. I've always seen the Draenei thing on the page as a reconfirmation of his faith. I'unno.

If there can be runes that conjure demons, fel and even shadow. Why not Light?

I've been enamored of this idea for a while. The inspiration actually involves the Naaru - who, as we all know, are just large floaty runes which chime, are telepathic and give off Light. And are apparently capable of making nuclear reactors.

Then came the idea that "hey, I bet Naaru each have an independent symbol". Explanation behind it being that it makes sense, and Blizzard didn't give them each unique models because there are too many scattered over Outland and Azeroth.

Wouldn't a Naaru's rune be, by definition, a holy one?

And yup, I concur with Bovel. Besides, just the fact that casters use belief to channel Light doesn't mean that some creatures (read; Naaru) aren't innately holy.

Because those are based on Arcane magic. Fel is Arcane, and that's why Dark Inscribers exist.

If the Ley-lines can enhance a divine caster's spells then obviously there is some sort of connection between them and the religions of Azeroth. If they can compliment a spell by empowering it, I don't see how they couldn't do the same but with less practicality based on the fact you have to actually -draw- something to give your spell a connection instead of just waving your hand at a person.

If anyone need a comparison to why Light Runes wouldn't particularly work. . .

Imagine of Arcane was electricity and the Light was a compliment. Whilst you can flow electricity through a copper wire, no matter how hard you try, that compliment of yours will not pass through the material by any means.
