I've supped from the goblet of evil intent.
I've dwelled in the cathredals of all that is good and holy.
I've rested carelessly upon cushions while light and dark raged war.
I've committed lesser evils for the greater good.
I've been selfish and sacrificed others to benefit myself.
And I've given myself up in order to save someone I've never met before.
Through roleplay I have seen all of these sorts of 'characters'. From Ara'Gazhi to Versich. From Dagrim to Sindri. From Paota to Mundo. Perhaps you've never met these characters before, but, eh, to me they are different enough and enjoyable to roleplay. Which is a key point. Every one of these characters were fun to roleplay.
Sure, the morally grey character is lovely and all. You get all that cute little 'I'm not evil but I do evil for good' stuff going on. It's fun. Sure.
And acting as the good guy in a storyline is also pretty fun. Helping kittens from trees and what not. The innocence (or hardcore zealotry) is really enjoyable to roleplay!
But so is being someone who's just a bastard. Seriously. Just being completely out for yourself or your goal and not giving a damn about everyone else is one of the funnest things I've ever roleplayed. And I really miss it. I didn't really kill people. Heck, I barely did anything. But there was an incredible sense of fun in playing a demon who wanted to benefit himself and help conquor Azeroth.
In short. BEING JUST PLAIN EVIL IS JUST PLAIN FUN!
Back to the subject at hand, why not combine the two? The family fights to keep itself safe, and ultimately turns to darker powers to support itself. Perhaps some members of the household are against it as some are corrupted to believe in the Legion's cause, and thus believe that they could use the power of the Legion to become more powerful than they ever were in the past.
