Reigen Requests: Event Etiquette
#31
...Wait, Immy was I being a big damn hero during your event, I remember Sonn trying to pull one-liners but I did have him die while trying to be heroic.
Hand me some feedback!
Spoiler:
Quote:I don’t want you to protest,
I don’t want you to riot,
I don’t want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write.
I don’t know what to do about the depression and
the inflation and the crime in the Streets.
All I know is that first, you’ve got to get mad.

You’ve got to say:
I’m a Human being God damn it !
*MY LIFE HAS VALUE!*

The thing about Sonn was that the consequence of trying to pull off overt heroism was met--he died for it. And it was an awesome death.

No, I'm not saying that to be malicious. That is perhaps one of the few exceptions to Big Damn Heroes I enjoy--the kinds that meet tragic ends to a great cause.

And saying the character would do it another way is an argument. People won't do anything different because you want your event to go off how you want it to the letter. If you just want a predetermined result, why bother with an event?
Don't like people doing things that may throw your event off the rails? Don't DM. Ever. You'll be horribly disappointed.

You see, my events are anything but railroads (or rather they're more so like a very complex and unreadable London tube map), and I always try to give players a huge deal of freedom on how they want to proceed. And, except from the headache of constantly adapting to how my setting is played, I have to agree with these event rules too. These pieces of advice aren't here to help you railroad an event, they're here to try and make things go smoothly. :)

Edit - I also have to say that while I do encourage when people outshine each other ICly, I -do- make sure that everyone gets their chance, and I must say, everyone does (I hope). I even make bosses that are significant to the characters. So it indeed seems like the "big damn hero" / "final blow counts!" sort of deal, only that I always make sure to plan something in the setting and in the proceeding of the event for everyone to shine. You don't start as a big damn hero, but in turn, everyone gets to become one, often in less expected ways too. Sometimes when a player is a bit sitting back I'll come up with something that makes them come in and save the day. And with this group of big damn heroes doing hero stuff in turn, you get to greater cooperation and people outshining each other in their own way, getting their share of the "I do matter" part, and being ALL able to brag about the event's outcome because they ALL contributed something heroic that kept the story going (and their innards from becoming outards - I'm an evil DM.)

I think it's a bit what I liked in Immy's event, though maybe to a lesser scale (after all, you ARE fighting with the King of Mid--- I mean Gnomes), and though a lot of people participated in a lot of ways, the fact the battles were kept fluid and people tried to come up with stuff.
Allons-y!

I'm going to try a different approach here with my upcoming event. Instead of it making out the single characters in the event to be a "Big damn deal", it's going to make the group feel like "A big damn deal."

Basically, instead of feeling like you're the one that brought the awesome, you'll feel like you're a part of a larger set of awesome.

That and lolcharacterdeaths. I better get on writing some of that up.

As a RPer of big damn heroes, I will have to say this.

You can't just BE a Big Damn Hero. You have to earn it. You follow the event rules, and be mindful that you're still RPing and not just dice rolling every 7 minutes. Being the Big Damn Hero is fine if you do it tactfully and tastefully. Rather think "how can I derail this event", think "how can I contribute to this event in a meaningful, personal way", without making it all about -you-. You are a big damn hero, but you're one of MANY heroes, too. Be humble about it both IC, and OOC. People will like you for it much more both IC and OOC, too.

And honestly, if you're being a glory hog LOOK AT MEEE spotlight thief, then you aren't a very good "hero" by any stretch of the world.

Exception applies to people who are cool enough to RP Ultimate Fake Heroes :D
Your stories will always remain...

... as will your valiant hearts.
