Installing Cataclysm 4.3.4a
#16
Well. I'm starting to get... Minorly annoyed.

This time, I installed the path with the four WinRAR extracts... Which actually downloaded this time. I'd tried each of the two download links before, but neither time did they have the RAR files. This time, they did. So, following the instructions, I made a file on my desktop, and extracted all four, in order, into the folder. I overwrite whenever it asked, and everything it asked to overwrite. I'm 99% positive I didn't forget any files. I didn't do anything else, ran no other files (had no clue if I was supposed to), and I ran WoW.exe. It didn't run at first. So, I did what seemed to work for some, and restarted in safe mode (funny story, I'm typing this in safe mode right now). And still, it wouldn't launch. I got this error message :

"This application has encountered a critical error:
The system can not find the file specified.
Program : C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\Conquest of The Horde\WoW.exe ((Where I saved it, obviously.))
ProcessID:2716
File: .\Client.cpp
Line: 3623

file: signaturefile

Press OK to terminate the application."

I have... Honestly, no idea what I could possibly be doing wrong. Though, I know it's something. And, probably, when I find out, I'll facepalm. I'm really sorry that I'm still having issues, though, as I've been saying, any help from anyone who can help is appreciated.

*Rubs hands together* Okay... Well, is anything "Read Only"? (I'm scrounging through the issues people have had in the past with the running of our WoW. If this doesn't work, I'm all out of ideas.)

As far as I can tell, and I looked through every file that there is in the download, nope. Nothing's read only. In the file, though, there IS a file caled, "BackgroundDownloader.exe" Downloads about 15 gigabytes of... More stuff. Think it may be to boot lower versions up to Blizzard live server standards, but hey, what do I know? Haha... But, if I AM supposed to run that, I haven't. Other than that... I'm entirely stumbling in the dark.

Alright! I have no idea what's left to suggest, but you should try this! Hmm... Have you tried the same download link every time that you installed the files?

Try aquiring the download from a secondary source. While I had no issue with my own installation, I also have it on a seperate hard drive all by itself and far from my WotLK install just in case. Absolutely do not put this in a 5.3.0 folder or you will definately be having conflicts as the patch.mpqs and realmlist are inherently different.

Use the unarchived download, place it in a seperate location from your existing WoW client and change the realmlist before attempting to log in. If I am not mistaken, the stand-alone download here on the server requires no installation but instead comes ready to go.... it's also plausible that I pulled mine from a different source, though I don't believe so. You'll also want to make a desktop short cut from that specific .exe. I named mine Cata to easily distinguish the two.

Okay, I've helped a few people out with issues, so I'm hoping I can help you, too! The following is what I did:

Spoiler:
(The following link directs to thepiratebay.sx, so if this is against the rules, please let me know and I'll edit this and PM people instead!!)

This is for a fresh install, completely fresh.

-Download this torrent, it's a completely usable already-been-installed version of Cata 4.3.4, build 15595, which is what we're using on CotH so far as I know.
-When it's downloaded, place the new folder in your "C:\" directory DIRECTLY, and then you can change the name to whatever you like. Perosnally, I have it set to "C:\World of Warcraft Unofficial".
-Get yourself a copy of the Realmlist.wtf file here, or just edit your existing file. IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE THE DOWNLOADED FILE, RENAME THE ORIGINAL BEFOREHAND, JUST IN CASE!! Something like Realmist_Original.wtf, or somesuch.
-(optional, though recommended, just in case) Grab this file, and follow that page's instructions on where to drop it.
-Finally, create a shortcut directly to WoW.exe, DO NOT USE THE LAUNCHER!! I'm not even sure if there IS a launcher added into the torrent I linked, because you really don't wanna use it. Just click on WoW.exe and let the game download in the background, you'll be fine
-Done! Enjoy your daily dose of CotH!

If you get an error something like "Cannot stream required archive data. Please check the network connection", then click on the next spoiler to fix it!

Spoiler:
-Open up Internet Explorer, and yes, you read that right, we get to mess with that hunk of crap. If you use this as your default browser, get another one (I recommend Chrome!), because IE will kill your computer slowly over time. It's funny if you think I'm joking :P
-Click on Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab
-Select "Delete personal settings"
-In the "Reset Internet Explorer Settings" dialog box, click Reset
-Once it's done doing it's thing, click Close, then Okay
-Just to make sure, double-check and see if IE is set to offline mode. If it is, fix that.
-Close IE, and then we may as well restart your computer, just in case, that way your Startup Programs can set things up properly.
-Try running CotH again, see what happens!

Hope that helps! :D

Edit: As an aside, and to make this clear, that first spoiler is exactly step-by-step what I did to get these working, and I've had absolutely no problems outside needing to delete my Cache folder once, but that's a common error I'm told. The second is the procedure that a friend of mine went through after I dug up some troubleshooting for her, and she's had no problems since as well, outside a bad internet connection.

Haha, wow. Didn't expect people would still be trying to help. Nikodemos, I've been doing what you've said, and it still didn't quite work. If what Memnoch said doesn't work, I'll try it from a different source. I'll make a post after I try... AGAIN.

I tried everything recommended except for Mem's with #1 of Kretol's blog link (the archived one). Same problem. I'm giving his route a go.

Well, I was actually shocked to find that, Mem, after following your steps, it worked. And yes, I was literally shocked. I've been trying this for at least a week or two, so to see it finally work was like a million suns shining down bright rainbows. Haha, but, thank you very much for posting that guide. And Kull, I'd suggest trying to follow Mem's guide too - if it worked for me, it'll PROBABLY work for you too. I hope it does, at least. Thanks again!

Try extracting the files from here into your WoW directory and see if that helps. It should overwrite Wow.exe and the mfil/tfil files.

That's not helped it either.

Times like this I almost wish I was a console gamer. Almost.

Putting a note here! When you download the game, all of it will be in read only and thus not allowing stuff to work!

To fix this just go to your main WoW folder which hosts all the other smaller ones and right click it, go to properties and tick the read only off. Then press okay when being asked to do it for all the sub folders and such. That fixed my life!
