The Ironbraid Clan [Dwarven Noble House]
#1
[Image: ironbraid-clan-header.png]

"Anyone tha' says it be better ta be lucky than dead,
nae e'er had ta wear this damned neck brace!"

-Reigndig Ironbraid

The Ironbraid Clan started their journey of power and prestige just after the War of the Three Hammers. Gifted an iron band by his wife to wear in his hair, the token of affection would come to later save his life. During one pitched battle, Reigndig lost his helm, and the Dark Iron he faced was poised to make the kill. The enemy had been weakened in the fight, and his axe had been blunted, so his weapon did not cut through the iron band at his neck's side. His life was saved, and he gained the name Ironbraid as a result, but the axe did damage his neck for the rest of his days, causing him to live in great pain and to wear a brace to steady his head.

Reigndig was given the honorary title of Thane and a small plot of land on a cliff overlooking Dun Morogh. His suffering became his son's, who growing up under the abuse of his father. When his son could no longer bear the weight of the abuse, he killed his father in his sleep with a dagger, puncturing his neck where the axe had failed to do its job. No one outside of the house knows what happened to his mother. Some say she was killed as well, others saying she was exiled, and still others saying she was part of the plot. What is known is that Kangrid Ironbraid inherited his father's land, and through harsh discipline and rigorous trade in furs and ores, expanded his land and wealth.

His wife Wylma bore him no sons, only five daughters collectively referred to by peasants and outsiders as "the Five Fingers of Kangrid", with Thidlynn ("Kangrid's Thumb") being the oldest followed by Reigna ("Index"), Ursla ("Middle"), Crysta ("Ring"), and Modanna ("Pinky"). Kangrid was also rumored to have fathered many bastard daughters in an attempt to have a son to follow him, but he would never gain his prize. He took out his frustration on his daughters, shopping them around to other Thanes to try and join houses, but the other Thanes were wary of his reputation for cruelty, and this only caused Kangrid to grow even more livid. He took his wrath out on his wife, dissolving their marriage and having her exiled for failing to provide him with an heir.

Eventually, the Orcs invaded Khaz Modan. Kangrid took his family behind the walls of Ironforge, and ordered his servants to stay behind and keep working. The Ironbraids remained safe, while most of their servants fell to Orcish blades without protection. When the Ironbraids returned, Kangrid flogged the survivors for not stopping the Orcs, setting them to task to rebuild. The process was immensely slow, as much of the labor force had not lived, especially the stronger workers that would have been fit for construction. They had heroically attempted to defend the weaker of their comrades despite being woefully unequipped, almost the entirety of the family arsenal belonging to the guard. The Ironbraids received looks of contempt daily.

After watching Kangrid punish one of his workers for stealing food by cutting off a hand, Thidlynn sneaked into his bedroom at night, armed with the stolen axe of her family's man-at-arms, and killed the tyrannical patriarch. Being a man of status, Kangrid's murder was investigated by the Ironforge guard. When asked, members of the household told them that an Orc had remained hidden in one of the cellars, and had killed Kangrid on his way out. They had remained quiet to repay the debt they owed Thidlynn for killing their master, but they still worried that the daughter would be the same as Kangrid. It was with this trepidation that they watched Thidlynn named Thane in honor of her father and grandfather, and she inherited her family's land and near-depleted wealth. It is in these conditions that she tries to rebuild and strengthen her name, aided by her sisters as well as her family's master-at-arms, who pledged fealty to her in fear of her wrath.

The Ironbraid Sisters

Thidlynn, "Kangrid's Thumb" (@"Jonoth") - 90 years old, Thane of the Ironbraid Clan. She is opposed to yet molded by the fierce and strict upbringing of her father. Her desire to see the clan rise back to even greater heights than her father led them is only matched by her extreme paranoia. Her sisters are the only ones she feels she can trust, and she strives to make their lives better than they had it under Kangrid. She is well-trained in social graces, as she was the primary vessel of Kangrid's ambitions to join with other powerful houses. She also has a hunter's instinct from her time spent in the wilds of Dun Morogh.

Reigna, "Kangrid's Index" (@"Reigen") - 83 years old. Being the second oldest, her father still had high hopes to have a son, thinking that the next child would be so due to law of averages. She was groomed for marriage much the same as Thidlynn, and the two sisters would often pose as handmaidens for each other around suitors. While Thidlynn showed strong promise in politics, Reigna had an affinity for lore, especially for the history of magic.

Ursla, "Kangrid's Middle" - 72 years old, the wild child. When Ursla was born, her father started to become suspicious and resentful of the fact that he didn't have any sons. Putting his plans into motion to marry into other successful families, he largely ignored Ursla in order to focus preparation of his eldest daughters. As a result, she would go about unattended into the wild, her father keeping a keener eye on her eldest sister. She observed her father's men kidnapping Thidlynn's boar, but was found out and threatened by her father should she reveal the truth. She has never revealed what happened to her, or her knowledge of the kidnapping, to her sisters, and she harbors much guilt for this.

Crysta, "Kangrid's Ring" - 53 years old. Her father waited twice as long to try for a child again, hoping to "expend the weak seed". It's theorized that most of his bastard daughters were conceived in this time, his way of testing if he had successfully rid himself of the "curse". Despite not siring any illegitimate sons, he decided to try again, and Crysta was the result. This was also the turning point where her father went from strict and tough on his daughters to just about abusive. Crysta was fond of visiting the peasants of their land, especially the jewelcrafters, and she learned their trade. When her family hid to escape the Orc invasion, she had taken it hardest among her sisters.

Modanna, "Kangrid's Pinky" (@"MstrCorvus") - 32 years old, the baby of the bunch. While 32 is well above the physical maturity age, it would be nearing adulthood culturally, so the idea with her is that she'd still have some growing up to do. Her father would still have offered her to suitors, promising marriage when she came of age (40 is the approximate age for Dwarves). She would have been pampered heavily by her sisters as their father pushed her harder, seeing her as his last chance to get one of his daughters in with a rich family. She would also have little to no memory of her mother, as she would have only been 3 or 4 when her mother was thrown out.

Notable Clan Members

Master-At-Arms - He came on board not long before Kangrid murdered his father, and secretly helped cover it up. He was fiercely loyal to Kangrid, co-signing to even the most brutal and unforgiving of his orders. He had hoped that, without a son to be heir, Kangrid might marry one of his daughters to his long-time lieutenant, which would make his progeny heir to the land. His continued service to the family is less due to loyalty to the daughters and more out of both fear of Thidlynn as well as hope that he might still find a way to marry in.

Wylma Snowhair - Former wife of Kangrid and matriarch of the Ironbraid Clan. She was divorced and thrown out for failing to provide a male heir to the clan. She was aware of his unfaithfulness, but stayed quiet about it. Her current status and location are unknown.

Guild Ranks
  • Thane - The head of the clan and lord over all the lands.
  • Family - Those related to the family by blood or marriage.
  • Master-At-Arms - The head of the clan guard.
  • Advisor - Though not members of the family, they have greater rights than those beneath them, and provide valuable insights to the family.
  • Guard - Defenders of the clan. They keep the peace and enforce the family's will.
  • Jester - Treated slightly better than the commoners of the land, but only as long as the family finds him/her amusing.
  • Bard - Same as the jester, but his status is directly dependent on his song.
  • Craftsman - The tradesman of the clan. They produce the wares used by both the family as well as those sold outside of it.
  • Peasant - The poor, huddled masses and gatherers.

Getting In On The Action

RP with the Ironbraid Clan is not limited to any race or location, though it will primarily take place in the Eastern Kingdoms (especially Khaz Modan). The family itself will be almost entirely Dwarf, with room in rare instances for non-Dwarves to achieve rank as advisors through merit or family through marriage. There will be many opportunities for merchants and other noble houses/clans to engage in RP with the Ironbraids.

If you wish to portray an existing member of the clan (prior to Thidlynn's coup), you can send a PM to Jonoth, contact me via Skype (phoenixrizin2k), or send me a /tell in-game on any of my legion of alts. Otherwise, there is no prerequisite to interact with any of the clan ingame. We do have a Skype channel for both clan members as well as anyone looking to get involved in long-term RP opportunities with the clan. It will be encouraged to join the channel, though never necessary as I plan to post any important updates on the CotH forum.

There are no IC rules except to exercise common sense. Know that all actions have consequences. There will almost always be an out if you don't like where things are going, but if you do things that are overtly unwise, the Ironbraids are very brutal. That said, I will do my best to make any punishments of the non-fatal variety.

OOC rules are simple. Follow the rules of the server, respect your fellow roleplayers, and if you feel like something is troubling you OOCly about the clan, take a step back and please, PLEASE, send me a message about it. The sooner any problems are discussed, the sooner they can be iron(braid)ed out (see what I did there?).
