Wiki Trends Regarding Profile Age and Gender

People generally want to play them more than the Arnolds that are the males of the species.

Being smexy isn't the only reason. The Arnolds just look fat /sagenod

Having read this, I should have clarified. I used only the posts found in the wiki. It's my understanding that these are articles that have passed scrutiny by the staff and community; as a result, there's a tacit understanding that the ages represented got a thumbs up (even those that were below Adult levels, and sometimes significantly so). However, this does not indicate that they are active characters.

Having settled on an age for Piroska, I was doing further research last night for height/weight values for blood elf females. I know that there's a chart to help us divine the correct numbers, but I wanted to see what others had done. It might be fun to come up with the results for those characteristics as well, since I'm certain that there's probably another pattern there. Here's a hint: people who were on the tall end of the height spectrum rarely had their weights correlate!

The one that readily comes to mind was the male sin'dorei death knight who was a mighty 6'6" (and, as I recall, described as being buff or muscular or something along those lines) but weighed a mere 150 lb.

Rosewind Wrote:Great job! You should check the night elves and Forsaken too, though.
I plan on getting the Forsaken done. As noted, I accidentally skipped over the race; I was relying on the names listed on the article, which sadly excludes that particular e race. I'll just apply the human standards for the age at which they died, as I did with death knights.

Regarding the night elves, I'm a little torn. It's hard to judge the age of a race that was until recently immortal. I know that we have standards for their ages, but mulling through the idea just gave me a headache. A really unhappy headache. If I did update the post to have the night elf data, it would be after the Forsaken. I may, however, just include a general breakdown of the ages and genders without focusing on the categories used above.

Edit:
Drak Wrote:Being smexy isn't the only reason. The Arnolds just look fat /sagenod
Which ties into the second concept that I might catalogue: the correlations between gender, race, height, and weight. For an environment that encourages immersion, a lot of roleplayers have difficulties separating our standards of beauty and right from what different races do. I'm pretty sure for draenei, the males look pretty darn appealing! And a lot of that bulk could even be from the armor that they wear since they're overwhelmingly shown as wearing plate as NPCs.

Sure draenei men can look good with the right clothes and face yada yada (as most) but they just look fat in other sorts of clothing!

On a serious note: Any character, race or gender can look good -IF- the player likes how they look, because if he makes his character which only to apeal to someone else, that character looks ugly. (That's just in my opinion)

I play female Draenei because they're my favorite race (they are aliens. They have a spaceship. They worship godlike creatures made of glowing light, and they have a prophecy that is strangely parallel to Christianity.) And I like playing my gender.

Oh, and I love the female character's accent.

True. But on WoW that's the minroity, dunno about here exactly.
It puts the grammar in the RP or else it gets the hose again...

If I have to play a Draenei, I only play females. Because male Draenei look stupid. Big hulking squid-headed disproportioned cartoon goat monster. I mean, Draenei females aren't the best designed anything on Worlcraft but they don't look absolutely goofy.

Edit: In a similar fashion, I guess you could think of how Orcs look. Orc females stand upright but kinda look buff, while Orc males are hulking wtf's with scoliosis. Now I never learned how to play Orc chicks at RP school, so I tough it out playing the male. All the Orcs I play are described as being small and scrawny, though.

At the same time, I'd rather not play a Human Male who always comes out like a body-builder. I describe 95% of my human MALE characters as scrawny, too.

In fact, If I could use the models for female characters with less bewb, I probably would and call them guys. B/c I can't rp chicks very well. (Either too feminine or too tomboy for my taste)

I can sum that up in one sentance: Male = Fat. Female = Nice.

Your like 80% right, but check my edit to see where my psychological disposition is at, regarding gender disparity. Blizzard's designers OD'ed the male characters on muscle milk and benchpresses, while females... For just about every race, look more medium. The reason Drae fems get played so much more than males, I think, is that El Male is just WTF, while every other male is passable.

I returned to this thread and included tables for both the Forsaken and the night elves, just as I promised. As before, I used the age guidelines found in the wiki.

Please note: I have not updated the Result section to include the new data. Piroska is lazy.

As I had postulated in my original post, the results for the night elves closely mimicked the patterns I saw regarding the draenei. Night elves were more likely to be Female than Male. Furthermore, night elves were the only other subset the possessed older Female characters; one-third of the night elf Female population were Venerable, even though the majority of Female characters were of the Adult category (47.4%). Regarding the Adults, nearly every Female that fell into that category could (comparatively speaking) only barely be called an adult; most were not beyond 330, which definitely puts them in the lower end of the spectrum.

Unlike the draenei, however, the disparity of Male characters to Female was rather minimal. Males comprised of 47.2% of the population while women were only 52.8%. As you may recall, Females made up 64.0% of the total draenei population.

Regarding the Forsaken, there were three characters that lacked any identifying descriptions that would have allowed me to guess which age groups to which they belonged. Furthermore, there was at least one character in the Forsaken subset that wasn't a Human and so the Blood/High Elf age guidelines were applied as well.

As I may have mentioned in this thread or others, I still plan on creating a similar thread regarding height and weight for each of the genders. I've been seeing a number of patterns creep up that I would like to explore (and hopefully confirm!).

Thanks, Piroska.

Erm. I think there are no older women because, as known, a lot of women -do- care about their looks and want to keep theirselves young. And, when you can choose between young and old, you'd mostly even unconciously choose the young. Of course, there are exceptions. And then, yeah.

Point! I think people like playing the young more than they like playing the old.

I might just roll a venerable tauren woman.

Aww, I wubbles numbers, too. And always a pleasure.

That may be a large part of it. I think that we sometimes perceive our characters as an extension of ourselves, even though we shouldn't. Remember, this can be the first step towards creating a Mary Sue; one of purposes of a Mary Sue is wish-fulfillment and I would consider being young and beautiful one such example. Our egos probably shouldn't be based on how we or others perceive our characters in terms of appearance or age. However, that brings up another question: why is it acceptable for a male character to be older and therefore most likely be less physically attractive while we want our female characters to be young and attractive?

I intentionally make most of my characters (especially female characters) older. I'd like to think that I'm single-handedly increasing the average age of each race! My girls are typically not overly attractive and some (including, perhaps, Piroska Al'shar) could never be called beautiful. I remember reading some years ago an article regarding the movie "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" and the appearance of their characters. They were designed to be as realistic as possible and one way that they did this was by introducing flaws, however minute, to each of them. These flaws included freckles, sun spots, wrinkles, unbalance to their features, and the like. Their philosophy was that a character with a flawless appearance would automatically be rejected by their audiences (consciously or not) as being unreal, while flaws made them look more human. We can apply the same philosophy to our characters.

Though I'm loathe to consider older ages a flaw. I mean, if not being 18 is a flaw, I'm in a world of trouble!

Part of the reason I want to explore the height/weight ratios of different characters on this server is because I feel that the same pattern exists. While browsing through the profiles, I noticed that many of them (primarily Female, but Male characters suffered from the same thing) were not proportioned correctly. If they were of average height, they were under the median weight. If they were tall, they typically had the same weight as the people of average height, making the disparity even greater!

A slow afternoon for the vast majority of the first post; about thirty minutes with the new information about the Forsaken and night elves.

  1. I enjoy finding patterns in data and I really love numbers. Part of what drew me to the game was the application of numbers; I'm a very big theorycrafter and a large portion of the appeal of playing a new class is learning how to perform optimally. My friends and guildmates can confirm my love of numbers -- they tease me about it a lot.
  2. I'm disappointed that there are so few! I have an orc female on this server as well, but I'm focusing on developing two or so characters before playing with others.

Excellent.

I love this post for I like numbers.. I like numbers with restraint, however.
Little by little, one travels far.
