Back on Feathermoon a few years back, the vast majority of my characters were in the same guild; it was my primary source of roleplay at the time, so all of my girls got tossed into there. As a result, they knew one another even though they never interacted with one another in-game.
I wrote a series of short stories once about the morning before a field exercise. It was a "day in the life" take of the guild as a whole and each of my characters. I wrote about their interactions with one another, what they thought of each other, and just generally about each of them. It was a lot of fun.
When I write stories (particularly my long story regarding my Forsaken Cili before she died), I do throw in little cameos. For example, my youngest brother and I had a pair of trolls a while back. They make an appearance in Booty Bay when the merry band of adventurers get stranded in Stranglethorn Vale. My brother's gnome mage accidentally bumped into one of them and I think that they considered nomming on him when no one was around. Nothing ever came of it, but it was a fun little unknowing interaction between my characters and his.
It's all the same world. It would be reasonable that sometimes, somewhere, they crossed paths with one another. Do they necessarily know each other? No, but sometimes it's fun to have that sort of connection.

The rules. Any member playing like that would most likely get a swift boot to the butt, a warning, and -- depending on the severity of the infraction -- a temporary suspension of his account. We take metagaming very seriously on Conquest of the Horde.
