Why can't anyone but the GMs and FHs make big events?
#16
To be fair I run a number of smaller events without the need of GM assistance. THe one I'm planning now? Horrid example. It does rely on some GM help, but really only for phasing. As you can imagine, I'll try to run them without the need of extra's. Course I've always like them puppets. I like ta see where stuff is without having to ask *nod* And know what they look like.

I host my own little events nigh every time when I log on to roleplay. Really. They are short (in both time and content), but they are fun, and they grant what roleplay is supposed to grant. Fun. Enjoyment. Development.

Large events, yeah. I've held a couple of those as well. Generally when I had a guild running a year back or so, but otherwise, as well. The reason I'm stating this is to counter your statement of players not being able to host large events, since it is false. Sure, GM help is much appreciated, spawned doodads and NPCs keep the immersion flowing stronger than your imagination could, but we're writers here, not gamers.

As for why we're not holding events anymore, it's simple. It's October now. Late October, to be precise. School, jobs, family, all that stuff is and always will be more important than this. I'm speaking on behalf of CotH carelessly, but I believe I'm not mistaken when I say that we are all too darn busy.

You yourself have stated that, too.

This. You're not the only one with a Real Life, hehe.

But yeah, generally, we have died down quite a bit. We have, and the reason isn't only busyness, it's largely just the lack of will to roleplay, ever since the whole clique thing started happening.

I can, and have run many events without the help from GMs, anyone is free to run them.

Of course with RL in the way it gets harder, but I don't think any GM has ever gathered 20 dwarves for a walk in Dun Morough ;D

Some of the most enjoyable events I participated in were run by players. Just got to take the time to do the planning and actually running something. GM assistance is rarely needed although we're often happy to help if you ever need it. As has already been said, though...

Run more player events! It's fun and a great learning experience.

I object to the claim of me being the only exception. If it hadn't been for Zhaei, the Deadeye Watchers wouldn't even be a guild. My role is creating the storylines, the story behind the different events, the why behind the what. And not even that I do without discussing it with him.

On a less personal note, I know that Nikodemos, CappnRobb, KageAcuma and all those people are all fantastic at making events. If I had Niko's ability to make the ordinary extraordinary and CappnRobb's ability to knock your shoes off with amazing and compelling stories, I would've been the greatest event host of all time.

I attended one event hosted by Nikodemos and Vladdy - put short it was beautiful. While it didn't last long, a random occurrence became a wonderful source of character development. They managed to turn a simple roadside ambush in Westfall exciting and entertaining. Events don't have to be large battles and big guns all the time. They don't even need GMs. It just needs initiative.

CappnRobb and Immy's events... I've only heard of those, and my heart bleeds to know I haven't been able to attend any of those. There are no words and I hope sometime in the future, I can attend one.

KageAcuma? That one's been keeping my Watchers entertained while I plotted with Zhaei. Haven't attended any myself, unfortunately, but people seem to be generally quite satisfied with his events. I hear he likes PvP, which is awesome if you can get it to work properly.

Just have to pull this one out, because I love it so: Camp Mojache was a wonderful event line. DAMN IT, HAWK! WHY DO YOU NEVER MAKE EVENTS ANYMORE?!

Oh, and last of all: FHs are really no different from other players, in terms of ability to make events. Our only benefit is a pretty name, we don't have any particular ingame commands that can make our event-creator-lives easier. :P

EDIT: As a random note, Kirabo, there's always been cliques, but now it's only become more prevalent.

I am incredibly shy and event-phobic.

...However!

The one-and-only event I did try to "run" was the wedding of my ex-main, Annabelle. Fourty people showed up. No, over fourty, we didn't have room in a raid. So, maybe I should give it a shot.

But, yeah. Don't need a green tinge to one's name for events.

I enjoy being in, and running, small events. It helps me feel flexible as most of the time I just plan to get it started, then let the chips fall where they may. I've had the company of a GM a few times, though it's usually just because they want to RP too.

You're right, I should get back into them more often. But no, I'm not touching large events with a thirty-nine and half foot pole.

I've had many ideas for many events, over my long stay here at COTH. Lots of ideas for storylines and plots, mostly focused on shady goblin crime stuff. But, I have to admit, I've always been intimidated to speak about them. For the most part, I have no idea if other players are interested in them, or if what sort of territory I'd be able to move on. That, and the logistics are overwhelming. I know everyone likes to crow on the "use yer imagination!" but don't we RP in WoW primarily for the visual representation it can provide? If we wanted to completely ignore in-game stuff, why haven't we all just decided to become text-RP'rs, then?

That, and I never felt like my ideas were really worth bothering the GM team with. They're already swarmed with work and stress, so why should I try to add to it? Also, I'd have NO IDEA where to begin with DMing stuff. Like, I don't know how I would implement combat, or narration, or how to direct stuff. It seems overwhelming, when I think about it.

The point is, there are a lot of barriers for players wanting to kick up their own storyline. And, there definitely are players who are in the "in crowd," who can secure GM backing more readily than others. This isn't anything new; at one point in time, I was in the "in crowd," back when most of my friends were promoted to GM's.

I don't think we should wave it all off. That being said, I'm currently swamped in so much college stuff I can barely RP. I couldn't run any hypothetical events, even if I wanted to.

I think it all matters on advertising, you need to make a pretty post with pictures and nice words that flow easily. You also shouldn't be advertising by spamming it everywhere, anywhere you can. That will discourage people from joining the event.

That's the whole point of this :P Not at all to point out people who have gone above what I've already stated, I'll hop out of this thread for a bit (My mother needs a ride) But I'm glad this is becoming a "bigger" thread >.<

A big issue is that people think of 'event' as 'we get a quest and go beat up some bad guys'.

It could be a social event, chaps.

Even big combat events can be done without GM help, you just need a little...

Chh. The Imagination song is totally better than Spongebob.

But back on topic, I am being honest with this. Back in my days...

We rarely had npcs spawned for events. And I am being honest. I used to do random events without using any GM powers, no spawning, no nothing! Imagination is a great tool for players who want to do something without GM assistance.
