Commenting in Character Profiles
#1
Hello everyone.

After some deliberation in the team, we've come to a decision to prohibit, for now, posting in Character Profiles by anyone other than Forum Helpers and the staff.

What this means is that from now on, please don't comment on profiles in the Character Profiles board, unless they are in the Workshop. You are still free to lend a hand in the Workshop as normal, but once a profile passes into the approval queue, please leave any and all commenting to the staff members. This decision has been made to prevent conflicting information and confusion that both gets in the way of the staff's work and discourages new members posting their first profiles.

Mind, if you're new and are posting up your first profile, I sincerely recommend you start in the Workshop. We will still be moving profiles back to the Workshop that require significant amounts of work, so the playerbase won't be excluded from the Character Profiles entirely. However, when a profile pops up in the approval queue, let the staff members take care of it. If you have any concerns about a profile, please send a PM to a staff member or post them up in the PD and we'll do our best to address these concerns. If you want to give friendly feedback, there's always PMs to the player it concerns or Feedback Threads.

Well, that's it!

Love,
the GM Team.

Not really sure how I feel about this rule. Why can't I comment on a profile when I feel I have something relevant to add? I've been here for three years, and a GM for two. Can we provide constructive criticism, or attempt to help when it looks like things are going south?

Yeah, I'm sorry but... when I suggested that people don't comment in threads months ago, it was more like "When it comes to people that don't know what they are doing with it" which was the issue at the time.

I feel like this has been taken like... a little too far? Now it's being used to "Well, this person can't help you in a profile either".

In which case we might as well post it all in private discussion, or disallow other grunts from even seeing it... 'cause they can see it, but they can't help us out in giving our point of view when doing profiles. Which are corrected by other players; the forum helpers.

It becomes a problem when grunts undermine the authority of forum helpers or GMs by conflicting with them in profile threads or trying to do their job.

Don't get me wrong, if you want to argue about lore interpretations, that's perfectly and totally cool. It's just that the profile forum is not the place to do so. You're better of raising it in another thread elsewhere.

What authority do forum helpers have? Aren't they supposed to be players and approachable? And to be honest, lore discrepancies -often- happen in profiles, I'd think that'd be the perfect place for it.

Honestly, if someone has something helpful and constructive to add to the profile, they should be allowed to post. I see no reason to make a thread over one or two issues per profile. It seems like a waste of space and time. I agree that there is a point where players should not undermine the authority of the Forum Helpers and the GMs (Though I have not seen them do a profile in several years).

Very few people look at, if even respond to, profiles in the Workshop. So what are we supposed to do when we are, essentially, thrown to the wolves when eight different GMs and FHs come in, tear apart a profile, and then leave you to either dispute it (kek) or fix what they consider a problem. Am I a little peeved about my own profile at this moment a some in the past? Yes, I will be honest. It's just that there is no reason to ban everyone from posting on a profile when they have something constructive to say. My profile sat on the Workshop, albeit for not a very long time. In my experience, no one looks at profiles in the Workshop, if they do it's not for long.

And yes, this is a good place to rant about this specific issue.

Will you stand up in defense of Justice and the Law?

They have the authority to approve threads and request changes be made, but that much is obvious.

If a person whose profile is being challenged wants to try to work through those problems, then that's fine. If it becomes a big enough issue that outside people not involved feel the need to comment on it, it is best put elsewhere so that it doesn't provoke an argument within a profile thread or create the problems I mentioned above.

And, I don't see why that's a bad thing. Profile threads get moved. Threads in general or lore stick around and can be useful for future reference.

I was told the reason for there being no commenting was because of players getting into arguments on such profiles and driving away the peons. To be honest there could be better ways to solve this. Someone starts making grammatical and spelling changes you tell to stop. Make it a rule, but when it comes down to players putting input into their profiles and helping with lore I believe they should be allowed. You could say 'That is what the Workshop is for' but a few people even look at the workshop, rather the active profiles. The profiles that might need this assistance. I have known people who write up a profile and send it in for approval, without even sending it to the workshop.

I think that will just drive the heat from profile threads to general discussion threads (which tend to be more public and viewed more than profiles), but very well. When I hold issue with something, I'll make a GD thread about it. Gracias, senor.

(Cartoon does have a point though, a lot of people don't post in the workshop)

That's understandable. However, I do think it'd be better to refine this rather than it being "Okay, players can't help other players", which would be much better.

Part of the thing with that, is it allows the players to speak with the forum helpers... something that doesn't even really happen on the workshop.

I think this argument would be moot if people used the Workshop.

Use it. It's there.

As well as if the forum helpers would (Though they do sometimes) work on profiles while they are in there, to make them acceptable before they are posted.

It starts with us teal-names, though. If more of us posted in Workshop first instead of assuming we have everything right and clear and whatever it would encourage people to go there.

Yes?

Try to convince people who don't. The workshop is a tool, it does not need to be used and is not used quite a bit.

Also, usually someone is confident in their profile enough to not have it in the workshop, which is often when discrepancies come up. Can't always foretell what the FH's will have issue with.
