You know, out of all the races of WoW that we play, I firmly believe that Gnomes are taken the least seriously. And it isn't the people who play Gnomes, it's the people who don't play Gnomes. I know that they don't mean bad by it, but they often find Gnomes cute, and nothing else. However, there's a lot behind that cute that people put into their characters because Gnomish society does a lot to Gnomes as they grow up in it because it can be strict in many aspects and if you add the fall of Gnomeregan and the eradication of 90% of a race, you're dealing with a character that has a complicated history. Additionally, they see the world in a different way: what they can make out of it. It's a very thoughtful race to play and not many people seem to think that it is. And no matter how many reasons people give to take Gnomes seriously, there are still plenty of players who will read them and still not take Gnomes seriously. It's annoying, and it's the reason I'm retiring my Gnome character.

This.

I kinda do get fed up with how easily people write off gnome characters. Just coming from someone who's RP'd a gnome since forever and a half. And yes, I know that my gnome is one of the silliest, whackiest, off-beat characters around. Referrin' to my Rofupi of course. And, really, the way I RP him, I can see why people just kind of brush him off....

But, y'know, I put a lot of damn work into it. And there is a lot of character underneath the surface. Rof is crazy, but there's a whole reason to for the crazy. A whole history dealing with drug abuse and the loss of home and siblings and all sorts of other stuff. So I do get miffed when people approach the character all "lol ur a gnome" and then try to humiliate him in every way possible. Both in dialogue, in-combat, in just about everything.

To go on a previous post I made. "Gnome punting" is cliched, worn-out, and makes the player (not just the character--the player) look like a jackass. I've seen many, many players use this attack and it's so cliche, unoriginal, trite, etc etc, and I admit that I do think less of a player when they use it IC'ly.

I'm just sitting there to myself, thinking, "Wow. Out of all the numerous, infinite methods of attack, you're gonna use that? I'm not even worth thinking up of an original attack on...?" This is off-putting especially someone to me, who puts a lot of thought / consideration in how Rofupi attacks an opponent. Every time someone half-asses an attack against Rofupi just because "lol hez a gnome" makes me irritated. If I'm putting thought and consideration with my interaction towards you, you should do the same.

Yes. I am tired. And frumpy. And grumpy. And I've had a long day of finals and am stressed and am looking for an easy target to vent my frustration in the form of ranting. And I'm probably way late to the party.

Taking a dirt road off of the subject from elf-hate, because it clearly extends farther than that.

I've idled on my little Lendri in the OOC areas for awhile at times waiting for roleplay, being subjected quite abit to this sort of thing over the years. The whole "Eww, Undead/Forsaken!" thing get's real old, real quick, and it's not funny anymore. Some people may be new and not know that, or don't know the person very well so they try and be funny. I understand. I'm sure a lot of other people understand this, too. Unless you don't say anything to the person, they'll keep doing it. And when you're socially awkward like me it's hard to bring up a conversation with them in whisper asking them to stop. I've done once, and it went something along the lines of; "Why? I was just kidding. Stop being so serious."

Am I really being 'that' serious when the past few years on CoTH you get quips about the race that you play at least once a day? I don't think so. Not in the least. But then again, new people won't know. But is it considered okay for them to still make fun of your character, or you for making them? No. It's not.
So as long as there are new people, this will continue to happen because they have no prior knowledge of what has been subjected to you in the past, and they may think it's okay. That they're being funny. I don't idle in the OOC zone much anymore because I get called out on for playing a Forsaken. It's really unfortunate because I use to talk to many people who frequented around the usual campfire or hilltop side.

Now when I go there, the first thing I hear is; "Ewwww."
Or get smacked on the head.
Or hear Lendri be called disgusting, or a nasty comment on her TRP2, or something else that -isn't nice.-

Feeling like an outcast as a seasoned player on CoTH hurts. I've been rude to so many times by people that don't even know me or know my characters. It's just unfair. But.. I digress from my own situation.
There are sometimes where people make characters that are -asking- to be made fun of. Asking to be hated. And sometimes they are. This unfortunate act carries onto the people that play their character with a different standard than the one you previously mocked.

This elf is blonde, has blue eyes and had a childish lunatic behavior that people OOCly groan about behind their computer screens. They go to express their dislike for the character, but the person who roleplays them also roleplays an orc that is honorable, holds himself in respect of the Old Horde, and generally leader-esque.
->
They get called a bad roleplayer, or a typical elven roleplayer, just because the attitude of their character. That is OOC jabs and completely disrespectful to that person and the race, as I've seen some good elf roleplayers out there that stray far from the 'typical bloodelf.'

Then a completely different person comes around with a totally different bloodelf, but still get made fun of because the history that the race has.

Is it fair to OOCly jab at them for their character's personality and make fun of them for it, or hate them without even knowing them or the character?
No.

Is it fair to talk to them rationally about it OOCly, find abit more about how they act like this, and then give opinions about it?
Yes.

Some people just make characters for the heck of it with crazy personalities to see what people would do. Good roleplayers. Because they've seen what happens when other people do it, and feel like being a troll. Then people who encounter them once in roleplay, who see how the character acts, automatically assume that the person themself is a horrible roleplayer! They don't even get to know them or the reasoning behind the character before they make their snide remarks and go along talking behind their backs.

It's okay to dislike a character if they're meant to be disliked, or have a dislikable personality. Just don't take it to the person who is behind them.

Quoted to reiterate how much this BOTHERS me. To agree with Krent, when someone tries 'punting' my Gnome, I will think a little less of the person, because it's just.. well, exactly what Krent said. It's insulting, to a point.

Rofupi is known as the 'silliest' Gnome, where I think Piken may be known as the angriest(one of? I'unno) who was always jumpy and had an itchy trigger finger, smokes WAY too much, and throws out swears left and right. Like Rofupi, there is a lot more to him than "lol fuggin noamz" and it's very disheartening to see others not even try to take him seriously(when he's in a calmer-than-usual state). I think it contributed to why I didn't RP Piken for I don't even know how long.. I felt like the only people I could 'safely' RP and be taken seriously with would be other Gnomes.

Also, something that has bothered me, that I said in another thread, is how many people seem to not think about what they're doing in regards to combat, etc. and don't take into consideration the amount of time and effort people may have put into their characters and will try to do things such as kill them.. just to do it. Just for that extra notch. It's always been a problem, it's probably been said here in this thread numerous times, but I wanted to say it again because recently I saw something that made me get all sad-faise about it. Everyone loves feeling cool, but it doesn't have to be at the cost of someone else's enjoyment. :|

..YEAH, KRENT JPOP.

Okay, yeah. I can stand against disregarding a character IC because of their race. However... Punting gnomes in the OOC is so fun! Especially when gnomes punt each other. Or when the gnomes retaliate with awesome technobabble. I try not to take anything in the OOC seriously, unless it's complaints about automated voices saying "My Bad"
Uhh. I still don't get that.
Just saying about the gnomes and how they're treated as the derpy race...

Any oldies remember Nexi's Kimee? I don't think anyone would've tried punting her(and expected to not be turned into an undead minion).

She wasn't sprouting out fancy made up words, speaking super intelligent or inventing everything new under the sun, just a old little gnome who could kill you with a flick of the wrist. Or invite you over to learn Necromancy.

I honestly don't take any gnome who sticks to the retail-like sterotype of them seriously. Doesn't do their race justice and it makes my eyes bleed trying to understand and follow whatever the heck it is that they're doing.

You can't take anyone who plays a gnome without rejecting the gnome's culture seriously? I take the race at face value - to do otherwise is to dilute and belittle their culture.

A gnome isn't considered an adult until it's earned a PhD.

A gnome is born with a PhD in being a gnome. It's in the racial description.

If something dead came up to me, and was slightly decomposing and whatnot, I would think it to be pretty gross. GRANTED, that's not a commentary on the characters or the people playing it, but it's not like, oh, let's say... what one would call cute.

Forsaken are described to be rotting corpse-like undead. I just kinda chuckle when people portray it as pretty and not disgusting, mostly because I don't understand why THAT would matter.

But again, I'm the type to make all my characters deformed, scarred, and generally ugly.
Something about trying to have a conversation with something who's jaw is about to fall off, not to mention the skin on their elbows and kneecap has exploded off, and their fingers are now pointy bits... yeah... kinda hard to focus... Then theres the ones whos jaw DID fall off and their tongue is all flappin around and what not like a fish on a boat... Quite frankly it's distracting! All my focus goes to their jaw or their tongue man.
I echo Krent and Piken. This is 1 reason why I kind of left.

It can be kinda funny. The problem is people don't know when to stop nor or they particularly good at picking times to start. It creates somewhat of a different effect when you log on and immediately get a /punt or in a certain personal case, "Oh look a golfball."

Furthermore it puts us in a weird position, say we're not feeling so playful and don't want to go on with a joke you're essentially inflicting upon us. It is then on us to ignore the joke, which creates an awkward situation between the Gnome player and the punter, perhaps I'm just assuming everyone feels a little insulted when they're outright ignored. It's not you, it's the overused joke.

Lastly punting doesn't even make IC sense. When was the last time you saw someone feasibly punt anything that weighs around 40lbs (20kg for our metric friends)? That doesn't even add in the weight of equipment and armor. When someone punts my Gnome, Geezle, and they don't have a stubbed toe or something I actually feel a little power gamed.

If they're being excessively annoying, yes. Primary reason I avoid gnomes because they are flat out played to be annoying little buggers that you want to punt. There's been a rare few that I actually liked and tolerated, because they didn't act like such. Gnomes have always been the joke race, which is a pity.

But, for example, in Guild Wars 2 there is a race called the Asura. Basically gnomes in superior intelligence and living underground before being forced out of their homes by bid bads. I love them because they aren't annoying, they're smart and sassy and don't let anyone give them crap about their height. If you punted one, they'd come back with a siege golem to rearrange your face or pull out some other invention of destruction. I don't feel the same vibe from most gnomes that I have role-played with.

I'm not asking them to speak 'dumb' or watered down, but something other than a mad scientist or the one that bounces off the walls with techno everything and gets into everyone's face would be a refreshing change.
